[00:00:00] Hey friends. Welcome back to the Virtual Assistant Mama podcast. Before we jump into today’s episode, I wanted to read you a quick testimonial from one of the students I have in the Virtual Assistant Mama Academy. She said, I started working at my friend’s small business. Shortly after I resigned from teaching, I was lost and felt like I had no other skills. What I learned through working at this small business is that I have a lot of transferable skills. I’ve also discovered that I’m pretty good at learning technology. I do product production, order fulfillment, customer service, quality control, assist in designing products, some sales and website upkeep. I help manage social media as well. I’ve learned so much about myself, mainly that my identity is not teacher and that I can branch out and do things I haven’t done before.
[00:00:52] I see it time and time again where a lot of teachers think that they don’t have any other skills that can apply to other career paths, and I want you to know that you 100% do. So in today’s episode, I’m gonna be sharing 15 skills that teachers can utilize in a different career. So let’s just go ahead and jump right in.
[00:01:14] Number one is communication. We’re really effective with communicating expectations, communicating with parents, communicating with admin, helping students communicate with each other. We are great at this, and so this transfers really well into customer service skills that so many businesses need help with.
[00:01:33] The next one is computer skills. Even if you don’t know how to use a program, so many teachers I know are able to figure it out because if we get a new program that we know is gonna help our kids, we wanna learn how to implement it. So we’re gonna go figure it out. So most teachers have that skill. Uh oh. We’re not all, you know, super tech savvy, but a lot of us are. The next skill that we have is creativity. So we can come up with something out of our brains and just bring it to life, and that’s what a business is. It’s bringing ideas to life so you can help your clients bring their ideas to life and to their customers.
[00:02:14] The next skill that we have that’s amazing for different careers is goal setting. We can figure out what the goal is, what the end product needs to be. And we can backwards design and figure out what steps we need to take to get there. Again, a huge essential part of being a business owner.
[00:02:34] The next skill is leadership. We’re able to lead a team of tiny creatures and honestly, adults are just grown up children. So we can 100% lead other people in business and help our clients by leading their teams or whatever you need to do for that.
[00:02:53] The next skill is lesson planning. We can take exactly what we have to teach and break it down into understandable concepts and concepts that build on each other over time so that your students can understand the whole picture, and that, again, businesses need that. If they have a course they wanna create, you can help them figure out exactly what steps and what order and how to teach. The skills that they’re trying to teach so that their students will understand it.
[00:03:23] We’re also amazing at organizing data. We look at the data of what our students are doing, how they’re succeeding, where they’re struggling, and we figure out where we’re lacking or what extra support they need. Again, businesses need this. Multitasking is also one of our strong suits. We can have our hands in a lot of different pots at once, and a lot of business owners have their hands in a lot of pots at once, and they need someone to help them take that off of their plate so you could be their right hand person.
[00:03:55] We’re also super adaptable. We can be thrown a new idea or just a different direction that something is going and we just go with the flow. And so that, again, great, great skill to have in a different career. Also extremely patient. Probably the most patient people I know are teachers. That is really good because sometimes you have to have a lot of patience with your clients, with just whatever service you’re offering them. Maybe it’s like a lot of steps and so you have to be patient with that. Teachers are great at the. Also amazing problem solvers. If a problem arises in our classroom, we’ll figure out exactly what we need to do to solve that problem. And again, business owners are gonna face problems. They need someone to help them through that.
[00:04:46] Teachers are amazing. We’re also super, super resilient. We don’t just give up, we keep going at something until we get to where we wanna be. And that. Can be used in any type of career. Teachers are also amazing at teamwork. We’re really good at working with others to get to an end goal. And a lot of business owners, they’re gonna have other people on their team that you might have to work with to get that business owner’s ideas to fruition. So this is an amazing skill that teachers have. We’re also really, really good at time management. We can see exactly how much time we have and then we can figure out what we need to do in that time to get done whatever we need to get done. Again, super amazing skill to use in different careers. The last one is writing.
[00:05:37] Teachers are really good at taking the ideas in their brain, putting it onto paper, and writing it in a way that other people will connect. Learn, understand all the things. I can’t think of a single business out there that does not need help with their writing, with their copy. Businesses need help with their email content, their website, writing, their social media captions, all of the things. So if you are good at writing, which a lot of teachers are, you can definitely utilize those skills. So I hope this episode helped you understand that teachers can do so many things outside of teaching. If you’re no longer feeling called there, you have so many skills that can be used elsewhere. And that brings me into my special invite for y’all.
